Outlook prompting for credentials after DC removed from Exchange S

We just removed the domain controller role from our exchange 2003 server as
we will be migrating to the Exchange 2007 over the next month or so.
Unfortunately, with that role removed, everytime we try to send email,
Outlook prompts us for an account/password. If we press cancel, the email is
sent successfully. We do receive emails just fine. We are running Exchange
2003 on a Windows Server 2003 platform with all the current patches. Our
clients are Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007.

Any idea how we can eliminate this nuisance?

Hi there,

Using DCPROMO on an Exchange Server is unsupported, and will break your
enviroment like you've just found out.

When a DC is also an Exchange Server, you must bring a new Exchange Server
into the domain and then move Mailboxes and Public Folders and then unistall
Exchange from the DC. Only then is DCPROMO supported.

I am not entirely sure re-running DCPROMO to make it a DC again will fix
your issue, you may have to restore from backup.

Speed up the migration to 2007 or call Microsoft support. Running
DCPROMO on an Exch server is not supported. I wouldnt do anything else
before calling Microsoft.

Oh and BTW, the credential prompting is probably related to:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927612

But that doesnt change the fact that running DCPROMO is not supported
on an Exchange Server. I still recommend calling support to ensure
things get fixed up correctly on that server.
