External Relay domain to another email system?

OK, now I know between Exchange servers you can set up an internal relay
domain so two exchange servers in different Orgs can share a domain.  IE if
the user is not found on server A try server B in the other Org before
sending an NDR if not found.

Now, is it possible to have an MX record point to Exchange 2007 and then set
up an external relay for the domain but instead of the other system be an
Exchange server it is a completly non connected email system that is not
exchange and yet still do a domain shareing?

I looked into it and there is the External relay domain in exchange but it
really is just a quick thing that does not say if the mailbox is not found on
this server then relay to IP or sub domain.  I know I am missing some steps
but want to make sure this is not just a pipe dream.

Thanks!

Yes you can, they do not have to be Exchange Orgs, you can use other Mail
systems.

If you the other Mail system is talking directly to the Hub Transport
Servers, or if it is infact inside your LAN/Firewalls, then configure it as
an Internal Relay. If this is an external system and you have Edge Servers
also, configure as an External Relay domain (Edge Servers won't accept mail
for Internal Relay domains).

Thank you very much!

Just to make sure on this.

It is an external (Not on the same LAN) email system that will not be
communicating with the Exchange Hub transports .  Now an External relay would
still accept a message inbound and check the Exchange server for a mailbox
first and then if not found send to the External server?

It sort of sounded like an external relay would not first try to deliver
email to a mailbox on the mail server and then send to the other system if
one was not found.

Again, thanks for your help!!

Hi,

Both Internal and External relay will look internally for a matching address
before passing the mail along to the external system. The difference being
what I stated earlier.

Hope that helps.
