Exchange 2003 Send As doesn't work

Exchange 2003 SP2 on Server 2003 SP2. Outlook 2003 clients.

Have a mailbox that's used by 5 people. When anyone of them replies (or
sends a message from that address) it comes as "actual sender on behalf of
shared mailbox".

So I look how to get rid of the "on behalf of" and everything I find tells
me I need to go to the Exchange version of the Active Directory Users and
Computers, enable advanced view, go to the security of the shared mailbox,
click advanced and grant the desired users the "send as" right applying it to
"this object only". Ok, I do that. But it still comes "on behalf of". If I go
to the Exchange General tab and Delivery Options and remove the user from the
on behalf of list then the message doesn't go, comes back saying "You do not
have permission to send to this recipient.". What am I missing here?

Remove the Send on Behalf Of rights. Then the Send As rights should work.

You mean remove them from Exchange General tab, under Delivery Options,
right?
If yes then when I do that e-mails sent as the shared mailbox don't go, the
sender gets a message saying you do not have permission to send to this
recepient. The Send As permission is there, but for whatever reason doesn't
seem to have any effect

You definitely need to remove Send on Behalf of. Then Send As will work, if
you set it up properly. Double check :-)

I did several times. What it may be it's delaying in replicating/propagating
the change. I will try to make the change again Friday night and give it the
whole weekend to replicate itself. Thank you, at least it's good to know that
theoretically I am doing it right :)

Did the replication wait time work for you?  as I am having the same problem.
