SMTP Communication Problem

Hi,
I have an SBS 2003 box which has run fine for a long time, recently the
client has changed mail hosting provider to the same ISP as the ADSL
connection. Since we changed over whenever we send outbound email we get this:

There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server.
Please contact your system administrator.
  <ageconcernmorgannwg.org.uk #5.5.0 smtp;550-Verification failed for
<Administra***@ageconcernmorgannwg.org.uk>>

Which I find a slightly strange message as it says there is a problem with
the recipients email server but then in the next line within chevrons it
states that verification failed for the administrator at our domain
ageconcernmorgannwg.org.uk and I know that the user name and password for the
administrator is correct as I logged into OWA from the internal network and
tried to send a test email to my own email account??

I have tested this with other users than the administrator and they all get
the same error. Is this some form of DNS error.  The cutover was done on
Friday and the MX records were transferred from the previous web hosting
company to the ADSL provider (Zen internet) and since then nothing seems to
be moving in or out?

I have re-run the "Connect to the internet" wizard since the cutover just in
case and all setting seem right to me?

The server's domain is set to "MountainAsh" which is the location in wales
where Age Concern's offices are, yet their email domain is
"ageconcernmorgannwg.org.uk" this wouldn't have to be the same would it?

Is it possible to change the server domain without re-installing?

Any help appreciated.

So is their domain mountainash.com?  I tried an MX Lookup for this domain
but nothing came back.  I also found no A Record for
mail.ageconcernmorgannwg.org.uk.  Can you please provide all the DNS
information previous to the move and what the current ISP has provided?

John,
The internet domain is:

ageconcernmorgannwg.org.uk

Previously we were on mail.ageconcernmorgannwg.org.uk

and the hosting company were using:

mailserver.ageconcernmorgannwg.org.uk

I tried pinging these earlier and was getting no response, in fact just
tried it now and still no reply. Our server is on 82_70_36_126 (with dots
instead of underscores).

It is directly connected to a firewall router, so Zen should be delivering
mail directly to this IP address.

The internal domain name is "MOUNTAINASH".

I am assuming this would not cause any problems if its not the same as the
external domain name? I would normally have used AGECONCERNMORGANNWG.LOCAL
but for some reason that I can't remember now I set it up as the location not
as the domain.  The machine is in Mountain Ash in Wales.

Siv,

Seems there is an issue with the A Record and MX Record for
ageconcernmorgannwg.org.uk.

with Searching for ageconcernmorgannwg.org.uk MX record at
e.root-servers.net [192.203.230.10]: Got referral to NS7.NIC.uk. (zone: uk.)
[took 46 ms]
Searching for ageconcernmorgannwg.org.uk MX record at NS7.NIC.uk.
[212.121.40.130]: Got referral to ns1.zen.co.uk. (zone:
ageconcernmorgannwg.org.uk.) [took 121 ms]
Searching for ageconcernmorgannwg.org.uk MX record at ns1.zen.co.uk.
[212.23.3.1]: Refused! [took 121 ms]. Response: The DNS server reported that
it refuses to respond to the query. There's a problem with the DNS server
for ageconcernmorgannwg.org.uk.
There is no need to refresh the page -- to see the DNS traversal, to make
sure that all DNS servers are reporting the same results, you can Click
Here. Note that these results are obtained in real-time, meaning that these
are not cached results. These results are what DNS resolvers all over the
world will see right now (unless they have cached information).

WHOIS lookup shows,

    Registrar:
Zen Internet Limited [Tag = ZENSYS]
        URL: http://www.zen.co.uk

Name servers:
        ns0.zen.co.uk
        ns1.zen.co.uk

You need to either contact the Registrar to update the DNS Records or have
them transferred to the current ISP Hosting provider so they can be updated.
As it stands now, the records do not exist or they are being rejected which
most likely happened when the client decided to move or cancel the hosting
service.  Until this completed, email will not work externally for the
domain.

As for the internal SBS domain, nothing needs to be changed since .local is
correct.

John,
Thanks for the information, Zen are the ISP the client is moving to from
CyberID who previously handled web hosting and email.

It sounds like the DNS records are not fully up to date yet, I thought it
had all gone through on Friday night so it looks like it didn't egt dealt
with or the DNS propagation is taking longer than I thought.

Just out of interest, how do you look up A and MX records??

John,
I looked at that site and for the amount of DNS lookups I do they seem a bit
steep, I found an alternative at http://www.iptools.com who may not be as
capable as the one at DNSStuff but theirs appears to be free.

I have spoken with the ISP (Zen) who are now taking over the mail handling
and they have now set up the MX records.

Going back to the original question, does the strange error message I got
relate to these DNS/MX problems or is there something else wrong with
Exchange that is causing the error?

Siv

The original error was due to incorrect DNS Records most likely.  Lets
correct this issue first and see if this resolves the issue.

Siv
John,
I am now receiving email inbound so it must just have been the ISPs taking
longer than expected to transfer the mail records over.

Thanks for all your help.
