Exchange database import

Currently  I have exchange 2003 running on a 2003 server.
I have currently about 800 mail boxes.
The system is currently running.
I have a client that wants to shut down their small business server running
exchange 2003. They  want to move their data and public folders over to my
exchange server and get mail from our company.
Are their steps that I can follow to insure a clean transfer of data without
any  harm to my existing database of names.
Thank you.

In short order you would probably need to:
Export mailboxes to a PST with Exmerge
Shut down old server.
Setup recipient policies on your new server.
Reconfigure DNS for the new domain.
Setup new accounts on your server.
Import PST files into new accounts.
Change Outlook setup on the users PC's to point to your server.

Martin:
I am fine with all your steps.
Couple of questions.
Can I not just go into outlook on the clients workstartions and export their
mail, and calendar into a pst file or should I "Only" use exmerg for this
function.
With exmerge, does it export "Everything" such as all the folders that a
client has setup, calendar, tasks......
I have only used exmerge a couple of times.
Is their an article on how to use it.
Also, the vendor that was hosting the clients website/email that it might be
easier to start exchange, and dismount the store and then export the data.
What are you thought on this.
Again, it is key that I do not trash my existing accounts.
I already have setup my exchange server thru active directory the user
accounts and their password.
I also have setup in the recipients policy the domain.
Last question, How do I import the pst files into the exchange server?
Thanks for letting me bend your ear.

Sure. Exmerge will probably make it easier to do, but you can export from
Outlook.

Everything.

I don’t know. Google how to use Exmerge. :)

Im not sure how the hoster is going to export mail with a store offline.
Curious....

Exmerge will allow you to import mail as well!

Martin:
He was going to give me the priv1.stm, priv1.edb and the pub1.edb and backup
to a portable hard drive.
Then he wanted me to import that to my exchange server.
Makes me nervous.
Am I going overboard on fear or what.
Your earlier idea seems much safer.

Martin:
So do I take it from your last email that exmerg can be used in this other
sitution as well?
If so, are which one would you trust not to trash your current system.
1. Export all clients to pst files.
2. Import all clients to my exchange server using exmerge
or
Copy the edb and stm files to a ext hard drive,
Using exmerge, import to my exchange server.

I just don't want any thing happening to my exchange server.
Fair enough
thanks

First off, Exmerge.
Second, you seem like you are looking for some kind of guarantee that
nothing is going to go wrong and I cant give it to you.
You need to slow down, take some time, and practice this with a single
account or something. Do it over and over again until you get it right.
Importing mail is not going to trash your system. Doing this without knowing
up front how is what is going to get you in trouble, so go work on it,
practice it, and come back with questions if you are having problems.

We are always here!
