interesting exchange error

Just wondering if anyone has seen this before . We're in a mixed 2003/2007
environment. Some users are getting this from the 2003 side. User attributes
look OK. We suspect the a/v scanner but it does not seem to be applying the
ndr to everyone. Users within the domain both within exchange and another
3rd party email are receiving email, but we notice some users are getting
this error when sending to out side the the organization. This is an error
3012 in the applog.

A non-delivery report with a status code of 5.1.7 was generated for
recipient rfc822;email@emailaddress.local(Message-ID
<servernameZH15XXZoGsE00000acd@servername.local>).
Cause: The sender has a malformed or missing Ã´mailÃ¶ attribute in the
Directory Service (DS). The Transport categorizer cannot deliver the mail
item without a valid mail attribute.
Solution: Check the sender directory structure and examine if the mail
attribute exists.

I may be wrong but i dont think exchange 2003/2007 are really meant to be run
side by side for anything longer than a transition period. Are you intending
to leave them running side by side? If you have already started you may be
best completing the migration to exchange 2007 completely.
