Unable to email domain, no MX record but A record available

This is my second posting aboutt his.  Not sure which topic to post it under:

We receive bouncebacks when trying to email a particular domain.  I've done a
NSLOOKUP on the domain and found it has no MX record but does have an A
record.  When I send to the domain and run Network Monitor I see the request
and response for the domain's MX, Host Addr, and NetBIOS name service.

All of them respond with (Standard Query), Response - Name Error.  I'm not
sure why Exchange isn't using the A record since the MX record is not
available.

Is this a DNS or Exchange issue?  Like I said on the Exchnage server I can
run NSLOOKUP and resolve the A record appropriately.  Any help with this
issue would be greatly appreciated.

WHOIS lookup shows ursblljv.com is registered to Go Daddy.  The error is
correct, no MX Record's exist for ursblljv.com on Name Server
"ns15.domaincontrol.com" or "ns16.domaincontrol.com" which are both Go
Daddy's.  I do show and A Record for mail.ursblljv.com to 66.60.183.164 but
no MX Record's associated with it.  I would contact the Admin responsible
for ursblljv.com and notify them of this issue as they will not be able to
receive email until its corrected.  A call or email to Go Daddy support
would resolve the issue quickly.

I agree, but shouldn't Exchange be trying to deliver mail to the A record in
the event that it can't find an MX record? I think that's the gist of the
OP's message.

Sure, but the A record for ursblljv.com is 208.67.222.222. That's what
will tried if an mx record doesnt exist. And since that doesnt answer
on port 25, it will fail.

Oh, well if you care about *that*, well, yeah, sure.

(I didn't actually test to see whether it was listening. I'm lazy.)

The address 208.67.222.222 is for the OpenDNS server.

Ooops! I must have been looking at something else. Sorry about that.

Precisely, I believe it should deliver to the A record.  I show the A record
for URSBLLJV.COM as 66.60.183.164.  No MX record listed.

So I'm not sure what is the issue here.  I'm able to send email from my
personal email account.  I did run Network Monitor on my Exchange box when I
sent the email and receive the following responses:

DNS:QueryId = 0x6E13, QUERY (Standard query), Query  for ursblljv.com of
type MX on class Internet
DNS:QueryId = 0x6E13, QUERY (Standard query), Response - Name Error
DNS:QueryId = 0x3456, QUERY (Standard query), Query  for ursblljv.com of
type Host Addr on class Internet
DNS:QueryId = 0x3456, QUERY (Standard query), Response - Name Error

I was thinking I could probably add a static entry to my DNS server for the
domain, but would rather solve the issue at hand if possible.  When I resolve
the A record using NSLOOKUP, I get the 66.60.183.164 address, but when
sending mail it fails.  I'm not sure what is causing the issue.  Any other
suggestions?

Andy David suggested creating a send connector, but I'm not sure about how
to configure it.  Should I select "Use DNS to route..." or
"Forward all mail.. the following smart hosts."? I don't think I want to
forward all mail thru this SMTP Connector, or do I?

You want to forward all mail to the following smart host, but for the
address space enter *only* the  URSBLLJV.COM domain.

Ok, so I guess I'm not understanding what this would accomplish.  I tell the
SMTP connector Named URSBLLJV.COM to Forward all mail thru this connector to
the following smart host.  What do I enter for the smart host?  URSBLLJV.COM?
Add the local server as Bridgehead.  Then add the smtp address space for
URSBLLJV.COM.  How would I setup the connector scope? Entire org, or Routing
group?

I'm still not sure what this accomlishes.  Can you briefly explain?

Thanks!

You smarhost it to the URSBLLJV.COM mail server's FQDN or ip address.
You could scope it either or org or routing group.( Do you have
multiple routing groups?)

What this accomplishes is 1) ensures the mail gets delivered!
If that mail server is indeed accepting for that domain, or not,
you'll know.

Ok, so I don't have any other routing groups, or connectors.  I have the
default 'First Routing Group', that's it.

As for the option Forward all mail thru this connecotr.  I don't want all my
email forwarded to the smart host URSBLLJV.COM, wouldn't that result in email
being lost.  So how does it determine which email to forward to the smart
host?

By the address space. Set it for that domain only (URSBLLJV.COM).

I setup the connector and sent a test email to the domain.  I haven't
received a bounce back but I haven't received a response from the user
either.  We'll see, but it appears to have worked.

Thanks so much!  If I experience any further issues with this I will post
back to this forum.

It worked, they received the email and responded.
