I have a user who's mailbox size in ESM is shows over 260 MB, but in outlook
its reporting 8 MB.  I have confirmed no emails at the top level folder, no
data in sync issues folders.

Running Exchange 2003, Outlook 2003.

What is causing this?

You could run isinteg.

Thanks but this server has 3,000+ mailbox's on it. Not going to do anything
that would affect all users just to "attempt" to fix this 1 user.

Any other suggestions?

Do you mean "mailboxes"?  You could create a new mailbox if it bothers you
so much.

Wow Ed thanks for the help.  Yes I know I can create a new mailbox, but this
is a reoccuring problem (2-4 a month) so trying to find a better fix then
moving or creating new mailboxes.

I would check to see if there is a corrupt OST involved. Maybe the
client is not synch'ing everything from Exchange to the OST/PST?

Does the mail deliver to a PST or is it online?
Is the client in cached mode or offline mode? If so, are ALL
folders being synch'd?

Cache mode unchecked.  Tried OWA also.  Mail delivers online.  No errors sync
folders, and syncfolders is empty.

Thanks but I have already checked everything suggested.

Ok, but last thing I'll say is... Outlook will go into OFFLINE mode
quietly if a connection is lost. Then it will quietly go back online when
the connection is back. The client's don't usually know it has happened.

I would search the client machine for any OST's that may be there.

  Close Outlook.
Search the Hard drive (<F3>) to locate the *.ost file.
(Be sure to check in HIDDEN files on W2K or WXP.)
Delete all that are found from the FIND window.
  Open Outlook.
