Store Dismounted - 16GB Limit Reached

Hi

Running Exchange2003 SP1 on WinServer2003 no SP

Have about 200 Mailboxes.
The store dismounted today.

I ran ESEUTIL /d and it completed successfully
Only freed up about 300MB space but was enought to remount store
and get users up and running.

I immediately went around and started forcing some users to archive
Biggest mailbox was 1GB, the next 10 ranged between 300 and 800MB

Despite several bigger users archiving and me deleting and purging old
mailboxes
the priv1.edb size wont decrease. I ran a second offline defrag but size
didnt change
significantly except for maybe 200MB, but i'm sure a heck of a lot more mail
that that was deleted or archived.

What am I doing wrong ?

Thanks !

Deleted items don't get purged immediately.  You have to wait for:

1) The Deleted Items Retention period to pass.  If yours is set to 30 days,
you can run eseutil all you want but you won't reclaim any space.
2) Online maintenance has run.  Once your DIR period has passed, Online
maintenance identifies and purges those items that are past the policy and
also generates the 1221 information event that tells you how much white
space exists.

Can you apply SP2 for Exchange 2003?  It allows you to increase the database
limit up to 75GB in Standard.  It's been out for almost a month now.

ah okay thanks

it's now 12:02am , i just noticed that my daily online maintenance is set to
run at 1am to 5am
so hopefully by 5am it will have recovered all the space.
Thanks!

RE: SP2, yes i want to implement it
but i am a bit apprehensive since it's only been out for such a short time
and i am not good enough to sort out a problem should it occur during
upgrade to SP2

Still need to do lots of homework before i attempt that.

thanks so much for your help !
;-)

Deleted Items Retention
period to 1 or perhaps 0 days ?

Seth ,
I feel your pain - I went through this same thing 2 weeks ago - once I
figured everything out and temp fixed it I planned on the SP 2 install
during the long weekend. I installed it , did the reg tweak to increase it
and everything is peachy !. Nothing wrong so far ( fingers crossed ) .

Apply sp2 and the appropriate reg tweak and increasse the max store
capacity to 75GB.

or

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=828070
"Exchange Server Mailbox Store does not mount when the Mailbox Store
database reaches the 16-GB limit"

and then: Set Deleted Item Retention to 0, send set IS Maintenance to
run all the time and check events 1221 in the app log to see how much
free space is avail.

Hi, we had exactly the same issue.
You need to set the deleted items retention period to a lower setting.
We set our's to zero.
It will work, however not until the deleted items retention period has
been reached.  For example, if you delete the mail from the mailboxes
on Thursday, and you're deleted items retention period is 3 days, the
space won't be freed up until Saturday.

Hope this helps.
