Bug in renaming an AD account with Exchange

Hi,

May I make a request to an MVP to report the following bug to Microsoft.
Renaming a user account causes outlook to display an incorrect name. That is
name <incorrect name>. Using adsi edit to rename the CN value causes major
problems....Deleteing the Outlook autocomplete cache does not work and this
is not an Outlook problem. Once again I make a plea to an MVP to report this
problem to Microsoft. If there is a fix, I haven't been able to find it. Many
other people in these newsgroups have the same problem but there is no clear
solution!
Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanking You

More detail would be useful.

What version of Exchange?  What steps, exactly, are you using to rename the
account?  I've renamed lots of user accounts without any problems like this.
Is the "incorrect name" the previous name (i.e. you change it from Adam to
Barbara but Adam still displays) or is it some totally other name (i.e. you
change it from Adam to Barbara and now it displays Charlie)?

Hi Ben,

Firstly thanks for your quick repsonse. Details:

Windows 2003 SBS no Service Pack. Outlook 2003 cached mode.
I went through all the correct details of renaming the account, the alias
fileds display as etc.
To clarify the bug in AD and Exchange...and I can get you to reproduce this
error,
I am sure that you have used Outlook 2003, which means that you are familiar
with the Outlook autocomplete feature. When you type a letter a list with
drop down alterantives is presented so that you can choose an e-mail address
without typing in the whole address. It is this drop down list that there is
a bug. The list presents e-mails and names with the following format for a
GAL entry  name <name>
So my user is karyn smith. We renamed her to karyn hall so when I click in
Outlook the name that now appears is Karyn Hall <ksmith>. I need it to look
like this
Karyn Hall <KHall>. Yes I have cleared the outlook autocomplete cache. I
have rebuilt and updated the GAL and have manually downloaded the address
book from send/receive etc... The problem lies with the legacyExchangeDN (as
the old username Ksmith is still present in the CN value) and changing this
causes more problems that it fixes.
Hope this technical details help.

Thanking You

Ah.  The problem is actually not with AD then.

The autosuggest list that you're referring to is an Outlook 2003 feature and
is actually Exchange-independent.  It's stored in the .NK2 file on the local
workstation.

Start typing her name in an Outlook TO: field.  When the drop list appears
with the incorrect name use your arrow keys to highlight it (but don't press
enter) and then press [Delete] to delete it from the .NK2 list.

The go back to your TO: field, start typing her name (or continue typing it
if it will let you do that) and press ALT+K to force resolution against the
GAL.  It should be correct now.

Next time you start to type her name the AutoSuggest list should contain
only her correct name (now that you've used it) or at least not the
incorrect one (now that you've deleted it).

Hi Ben,

Thanks...I tried that and it didn't work. I have tried deleting the .nk2
file and letting it recreate itself. I have turned off cached mode, I have
tried everything....I like to consider myself pretty tech savy. This one has
really stumped me..Could you pass it onto Microsoft to let them know that
there's a bug. My gut instinct tells me its on the AD side somewhere. Thanks
for your help

Thanks

This is a known issue:  see
http://winzenz.blogspot.com/2005/10/outlook-autocomplete-and.html
for example.

There is no simple way of changing the legacyexchangeDN, as it is hard coded
into the DB, and used by Exchange internals.  IF you must, you have to
export the mailbox, remove the maill attributes from the AD account, delete
the mail store, re-enable the AD account with exchange attributes, and
exmerge the data back in....you will still want to add the legacyexchangedn
as an x.500 address.
