NNTP and WWW Services Switch to Disabled

Hi !

I've got a W2K3 Server SP1 with Exchange Server 2003 freshly installed.

I keep having the NNTP and WWW Publishing Services switching to Disabled,
even if I set them back to Automatic and Started.

The only information I have is a single warning in the event log as follows:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: NNTPSVC
Event Category: None
Event ID: 101
Date:  3/13/2006
Time:  6:29:46 PM
User:  N/A
Computer: CLEVELAND
Description:
The server was unable to add the virtual root '/' for the directory
'/Internet Newsgroups' due to the following error: The parameter is
incorrect.  The data is the error code.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Data:
0000: 57 00 00 00               W...

But no event log entry for the WWW Publishing Service.

The details of the configuration are as follow:

Windows 2003 Server Std SP1
Exchange Server 2003 Std SP2
Trend Micro Client/Server/Messaging for SMB installed
the server acts as a DC (the previous DC was a W2K Server box which was
demoted to a member server)
No backup software installed (for the time being!)

One caveat: the NT Domain Name has an underscore... (but not the FQDN DNS
name of course).

It's of course a big issue since IIS is not fully functionnal; Exchange
seems to work but no way for OWA of course.

Help greatly appreciated.

Nicolas

I'd suggest checking your Group Policies for one that is disabling those
services.  The Group Policy Management Console would be great for this as
you can run a Results wizard that will show you all settings that are being
applied on that computer.  GPMC can be downloaded from Microsoft's website.

Ben,
Thanks for the advice.
It worked fine and I found that the DC Baseline Policy (template applied a
long time ago on the original W2K domain) was active.
In fact, once you migrate to the W2K3 domain, the policy is not visible any
more (I'm not completely sure of that, however) - unless you use the GPMC
tool.
So I changed the NNTP and WWW services and it works fine.
Best regards
Nicolas
