Current setup

1 DC (Windows 2000 server standard) in network currently running exchange 2000

installing

1 Member server (Windows 2003 enterprise) will run exchange 2003

I am reading through the Exchange server 2003 deployment guide and it says this -

In the domain where the schema master resides, run ForestPrep. (By default, the schema master     runs on the first Windows domain controller installed in a forest.) Exchange Setup verifies that you     are running ForestPrep in the correct domain. If you are not in the correct domain, Setup informs     you which domain contains the schema master.

So what I am understanding is that I have to run this forestprep on the DC (Windows 2000 server standard edition running exchange 2000) from the exchange 2003 disk ...

My Questions

What will this do to the current version of exchange 2000 running on the DC ?
Is there anything else I should do prior to this step?
Do I still do these steps (from previous post) even though I am not making the new server a DC
          ldifde.exe /i /f
          inetOrgPersonFix.ldf /c "DC=mycorp,DC=com"
         ADPrep /forestprep
         ADPrep /domainprep

Thanks much

When upgrading from Exchange 2000 to Exchange Server 2003, you will need to
run Forestprep and Domainprep. This will not impact your existing Exchange
2000 server - they can work in a Forest that's "forestprepped" for Exchange
Server 2003, even if you don't install any Exchange Server 2003 servers.

What Forestprep does is extend the Schema to include new attributes and
classes in Active Directory that are required for Exchange Server 2003.

You need to run the InetOrgPerson fix if you are going to upgrade the Domain
Controller(s) - and thereby Active Directory - to Windows Server 2003 as
well. If the server you're installing Exchange on is running Windows 2000,
you can run Forestprep and Domainprep, then move to Exchange 2003.

When you decide to upgrade the OS to Windows Server 2003, run the
InetOrgPerson fix and ADPrep.

Would highly recommend doing a swing migration (setting up Exchange on
another box, move mailboxes & public folders, et al) if you can, rather than
an inplace upgrade.

Thank you for your help,

I will be setting exchange 2003 up on another box (the 2003 entriprise
server which is a member server) before I can do this though it says I have
to run forest&domain prep on the 2000 server (the only DC controller and
only server we had until now, which currently runs exchange 2000) I just
want to make sure running that will not interfer with the exchange (2000)
that is already on there.

Also - how do you move the mailboxes and public folders over? is there a way
to just move it from Exchange 2000 (on 2000 server DC) to Exchange 2003 (on
2003 server enterprise member server) easily and without it deleting
anything from exchange 2000?

Thanks again

- You can't replicate mailboxes to another server - if that's what you're
referring to - using any native tools.
Having said that, you should be ok with moving mailboxes to that server.
It's a tried and tested process and doesn't by itself corrupt a mailbox,
afaik.

- Public Folders are replicated to other Exchange servers in the Org from
the Replicas tab of the public folder's properties. This can be automated
using pfmigrate.wsf, including removal of the replicats from the old server.

Okay here is where I am ---

dcdiag

net diag

I ran ForestPrep on the main server the DC (Windows 2000 server standard edition w/ 2000 exchange running currently)

I ran DomainPrep on the member server (windows 2003 enterprise edition w/ 2003 exchange running)

(I followed step by step as to what needed to be installed and started per Microsoft's Exchange 2003 Deployment Guide)

From what I could tell from the logs of everything all was good end remark on ForestPrep and DomainPrep was installed successfully)

I then per directions ran setup again but was not given the option to install .. just None (Installed) / Remove / Change / Reinstall

Only the first two options had the ability to choose an action (Microsoft Exchange / & Messaging and Collabroation Services)

If I choose change I can pick to install the remaining Components

I tried this option and during the process I recieved an error on Lotus Notes (I clicked retry then cancel not sure why i would need this anyway) I recieved an error on Novell GroupWise (same as above retry then cancel not sure why I would need this anyway) Then Microsoft Exchange Calendar Connector errored saying it was already installed.

Finished

Now I have the folder in my start menu for Exchange -
Additional Resources
Deployment
AD Users and Computers
Exchange 5.5 Administrator
System Manager

If I go into System Manager It says <Domain Name>(Exchange)
and like in 2000 on the other server I can go into Administrative Groups and see servers everything like if I were on the 2000 server.

Now I checked in services and None of the Exchange services are started (I do not know if this is correct or not) I tried starting them (Figured they needed to be started because on the other server they are started) if I try starting them they all error with different errors.

Did I do soemthing wrong is it right for these services to not start right now if so what is next?  Ultimate goal: To make the new 2003 server with exchange 2003 the only server running exchange?

Thanks So Much

Mell

Hi,

It sounds as if you have run the installation several times. In a standard installation all you need to install is the messaging and collaboration service and the system management - uninstall all other options.

After this you try to start the system attendant and see what happens.

Okay tried this the only thing to uninstall was exchange administrator 5.5.

Same errors when starting services.

(example) System Attendant service failed to start due to the following error, The system cannot find the file specified

Also when trying to run the SP1 update it says exchange is not installed.

Thank you

Hi,

Sounds as if the messaging and collaboration services isn't installed. Try to start the setup program, select reinstall and make sure that this service (and system management) is installed.

What will this do to the current version of exchange 2000 running on the DC ?
Is there anything else I should do prior to this step?
Do I still do these steps (from previous post) even though I am not making the new server a DC
                  ldifde.exe /i /f
                  inetOrgPersonFix.ldf /c "DC=mycorp,DC=com"
                ADPrep /forestprep
                 ADPrep /domainprep

        Thanks much

Okay I have a new screen I have not gotten before, I clicked reinstall and then it says Select a server in an Exchange 5.5 Organization so I put in the other server name and this pops up.

Setup encountered an error while attempting to bind to the exchange server "servername"": 0XC103FC93 (64659); Could not bind to the Microsoft Exchange Directory server servername.  The Microsoft Exchange Server computer does not respond.

Any suggestions?

Thanks so much

  Hi,

Sounds as if the messaging and collaboration services isn't installed. Try to start the setup program, select reinstall and make sure that this service (and system management) is installed.

Okay tried this the only thing to uninstall was exchange administrator 5.5.

    Same errors when starting services.

(example) System Attendant service failed to start due to the following error, The system cannot find the file specified

Also when trying to run the SP1 update it says exchange is not installed.

    Thank you

      Hi,

It sounds as if you have run the installation several times. In a standard installation all you need to install is the messaging and collaboration service and the system management - uninstall all other options.

After this you try to start the system attendant and see what happens.

Hi,

2 possibilities:

1.) name resolution - the new server can't foind the 5.5 server in DSN/WINS

2.) You don't have the required permissions in 5.5
