Hello.  We have Ex2K and we are relaying all outgoing
messages through another virtual server which has GFI
to filter our Internet mail.  We have contracted with a
third party mail filtering service.  Now the mail filtering
service said that we should enter the FQDN of their
smart host in the Delivery Tab -> Advanced -> Smart
Host of the Default SMTP Virtual server properties of
the EX2K.

The IMS properties of the Routing Group, do I select
"Use DNS to route to each address space on this connector"?
This used to have the IP address of the Virtual Server with
the GFI in the "Forward all mail through this connector
to the following smart host".

Thanks in advance.

If you have a connector then you don't have anything in the SMTP VSI.
If you use the connector then you need to enter the smarthost in the
connector. If you don't need the connector then you enter the
smarthost name in the SMTP VSI. You wouldn't use DNS to route your
messages.

i) It is generally not advisable to insert smarthost in smtp virtual server
settings - this should be done on SMTP Connectors as you seem to be doing.
ii) Selecting "Use DNS... " does not uses a smarthost but delivers mail
directly using DNS lookups (to find out which mail hosts outbound mail for
that Connector needs to be routed to).
iii) The Smarthost settings (where you had IP address) will take either an
IP address [in square brackets if using IPs], or a fqdn, or a domain name.
(If you insert a domain it will lookup MX records for that domain). Using
fqdn is preferable over IP addresses - if the actual IP addresses change,
you don't need to take any action on your side, and if they're using
multiple hosts with same fqdn (DNS round robin) you will benefit from the
redundancy.
