Hello All.
I have strange problem with a new exchange 5.5 enterprise implementation I
have put in.

The store becomes sluggish and either 1 or 2 threads run at 25% on a four
way SMP machine. The OS is Windows 2000  and both it and exchange are fully
patched including the NOV 2004 patch.

I have run many articles including using perfwiz in verbose mode to add
additional threads. I have increased logging but nothing of any interest is
shown.

There is Q181410 which describes the symptoms but this was resolved on
exchange 5.0.

Has anyone seen this problem before as it is beating me...

Cheers

Try disabling and/or removing your virus scanner and see if the problem goes
away.

Hi Ed,

I have tried stopping a variety of services, NAVMSE, Event service and MTA
as well as the backup services and they seem to have no effect. The store
still sits there at 25% CPU and the response to users is poor.

I thought it might be muck in the MTA so did a MTACHECK which found nothing.
I have enabled auditing to see if there is any sort of brute force attack
happening but can't see anything. I have checked all the schedules tasks,
maintenance and replication and moved it all out of the working day but I
still see this problem only during the day and in a predictable manner. I
have a graph of processor usage for a 24 hour period which shows this, if it
will help, I could send it too you.

I should also include some added background as well (it may be of no value
but it can't hurt).
The original exchange site was a single NT4 server with Ex 5.5 enterprise
IMC and twin X400 connectors. Public folders are well used and run a VB based
script to convert inbound emails to public folders to tasks assigned to group
mailboxes. There are about 850 users and 30gb of data. the original server is
called bru02.
Bru 02 fell over about 3 weeks ago with a well corrupted store and had to
brought back from tape which worked well. as a rule we don't trust machines
brought back from tape and remove them from production asap. BRU07 was added
as a new DL380 G4 running Windows 2k and exchange 5.5 was loaded. public
folders were replicated and mailboxes moved to the new box. The scripts were
re homed and all was well with the world... Bru07 has all the mailboxes,
public folders, scripts, x400 connectors and the dir rep connector. The only
thing left on bru02 is the IMC for inbound connections. Outbound is throught
the IMC on 07 and inbound will be asap. The problems started over a week ago
and still have generated no events worth noting nor any message errors or, in
fact, anything in the slightest bit useful.

The big question...
Is there any way to find out what a particular thread is doing? If i knew
this I would know where the problem lay and ,therefore, where to start
looking for a solution.

Thanks for reading this, I am sorry it was so long...

Cheers
