Exchange 2003 unable to relay - using smtp smart host

Recently migrated from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003.  We use SMTP connector
in Exchange 2003 to forward mail to smart host.  This has been working fine
until we took Exchange 5.5 offline over the weekend.

Most clients are receiving and sending mail just fine - but we have an
automated process that sends payroll notifications and this is no longer
working for external e-mail addresses - the process still works for internal
addresses.  The error received is "550 5.7.1 unable to relay for
xx***@xxxx.xxx".

Not sure what has changed.  I do have the "all all authenticated computers"
checkbox selected under relay on the smtp virtual server.  I cannot see
relevant log entries.

Read something about needing to add the smart host address as a local
bridgehead server in the smtp connector?  Help, please!

I would change the automated process to send to the smart host.  If you
can't do that, you should make sure that the automated process is
authenticating properly.  If your Exchange server is not exposed to the
Internet, you can enable it to relay with reasonable safety, but don't do
that unless you're sure that Internet hosts cannot connect to it directly.
