SMTP - EXCHANGE BackupI am getting ready for another Hurricane season in south Louisiana and would
like to use the smtp service on windows 2k3 as a backup to my exchange server. I have purchased a new server and have it stored in a co-lo. Can someone explain (in detail or via a KB/white paper) how to set the smtp server at the co-lo to receive the mail and then send it to the exchange box once it is back up and running. * I recently tested this with my backup server (located off site from the exchange box) and it did receive emails for the domain. How do I get the smtp server on the windows 2003 web edition box to send the mail it stored for the domain back to the exchange box. I have a relay set up on the exchange box to allow relay from that IP, although I would rather not need that. Thanks How to setup backup SMTP server using Windows SMTP service
In IIS Manager - Default SMTP VS - Domains - create a new domain. - select "Remote" - in "Domain Name" dialog box enter name of domain - let's say foo.com | click Finish. - Go to properties of Foo.com in list of domains - select "Allow incoming mail to be relayed to this domain" - You can select "Forward all mail to smart host" and enter fqdn or external/NATted IP address of your Exchange server. - In SMTP Virtual Server properties, select the appropriate Retry intervals, raise the expiration timeout to appropriate/max number of days/hours you expect your Exchange server to be unavailable. - In public/external DNS zone, add A record for the external/NATted IP address of that SMTP server, and create another "MX" record with a higher preference value pointing to that A record - Your Exchange server does not need to allow relaying from that IP - all mail received from that SMTP server will be for the domain you setup in the above steps (foo.com) -- Show quoteBharat Suneja MVP - Exchange www.zenprise.com NEW blog location: www.exchangepedia.com/blog ---------------------------------------------- "Kris" <autot***@bellsouth.net> wrote in message news:%23tvpEfcdGHA.4720@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... >I am getting ready for another Hurricane season in south Louisiana and >would > like to use the smtp service on windows 2k3 as a backup to my exchange > server.
