I have an environment with exchange 2003.My remote sales people have outlook
2003 as the client and connect via vpn.Every so often they successfully
connect via vpn but outlook look sits at the "trying to connect to the
exchange server" error. This situation can only be resolved by rebooting the
exchange server.I cannot see any errors in the event log.
Can anyone help me out here please.

Thanks

What else can they, or can't they, connect to? I'd say the VPN is likely the
culprit, but you haven't really provided enough info.

That said - why not use RPC over HTTPS, which is far easier anyway?

The VPN is fine. The firewall authenticates. They can authenticate fine. Once
connected, they can access other resources on the network. They can also ping
the exchange server.for some reason outlook has a problem connecting. These
are several sales people from around the country so I cannot attribute it to
a slow connection on their end either. But rebooting the exchange server
restores connectivity. It is very wierd.the server looks healthy.

Can they access any other resources on *this* server? A file share you
(temporarily) set up?
(I still think RPC is a lot nicer)

I found that problems with Outlook connecting to the Exchange server
over a VPN are mostly caused by DNS difficulties. Typical scenario: they
can map network drives, they can ping the Exchange server, they can
telnet to port 25 on the Exchange server, but Outlook doesn't want to
connect.

I found it easiest to correct by providing an appropriate entry in the
hosts file.
