Where does Exchange keep old account info?

If email is sent to one of our Exchange Admins ("Joe Pro"), the sender gets a
message back from Exchange about a failed delivery to user ("Eli Van").  Such
as this :

"Van, Eli on 5/7/2007 11:04 AM
The message could not be delivered because the recipient's
destination email system is unknown or invalid. Please check the address and
try again, or contact your system administrator to verify connectivity to the
email system of the recipient. The MTS-ID of the original message is:c=US;a=
;p=DOMAIN;l=MAIL3-070507180407Z-39033  <mail3 #5.1.2>"

Joe Pro does get his email just fine.  Joe had restored Eli's mailbox at one
point because Eli's server (mail13) had died - if that is any clue.

Not sure what troubleshooting steps to take?  TIA!

There will be some forwarder or rule or alternate recipient set,
somewhere.  Look on the properties of the account (do this on the
Exchange server) and see if there is an alternate recipient set (it's
a button off Delivery Options)

Do you mean to look at Ad Users and Computers mmc - I've look at Delivery
Options in his AD User record and there are no entries.  There are no rules
in his Outlook.  I hope I've understood.

Hello Customer,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that when you send mail to Joe
Pro, you will get NDR about can not delivery to Eli Van. If I have
misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research, there must be some forwarding rule in the mailbox
which you send this mail from. That means: when you send mail from A to B,
the A gets NDR said can not delivery to C. The problem is that, the A has
forward rule to forward the mail to C when A send mail to B.

I suggest we try the following steps to see if we can resolve this issue:

1. Open A's Outlook, Tools->Rules and Alerts, select E-mail Rules tap,
clean the rules here.

2. Open A's account properties in ADUC, select Exchange General tap, click
Delivery Options, select None, click OK.

3. Open A's OWA, click Rules in left pane, delete all rules in right pane.

Then test this issue.

If we can not resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
kindly help me collect some information for further investigation:

1. When you send mail to Joe Pro from another account, do you get the NDR
about can not delivery to Eli Van?

2. When you send mail to another account except Joe Pro, do you get the NDR
about can not delivery to Eli Van?

3. Please post the whole DNR here.

Hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

Terence Liu [MSFT]
Hello Dave,

Thank you for kind update.

Based on my further research, this issue is caused by the delegate rule in
Joe Pro's Outlook.

You add a delegate in Microsoft Office Outlook 2003. The delegate's mailbox
object is then removed from the Active Directory directory service before
you can remove the delegate in Outlook 2003. When this occurs, members of
your organization may receive a non-delivery report (NDR) when they try to
invite you to a meeting or when they respond to your meeting request.

I suggest we try the following steps to see if we can resolve this issue:

Method 1: This issue is fixed in the Outlook 2003 Hotfix Package that is
dated December 19, 2005. For more information, click the following article
number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Description of the Outlook 2003 post-Service Pack 2 hotfix package
(Dlgsetp.dll): December 19, 2005
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=912007

After you apply the hotfix, the deleted user information will be visible so
that it can be removed from the delegates by using Outlook. Before you
apply the hotfix, the deleted user information is hidden.

Method 2: Remove the delegate in Outlook 2003 (on Joe Pro) before the
delegate is removed from Active Directory
1.  On the Tools menu, click Options.
2.  Click the Delegates tab.
3.  Click the delegate that you want to remove, and then click Remove.
4.  Click OK to close the Options dialog box.

Note After the delegate has been removed from Outlook 2003, the delegate's
rule is removed. Then, the delegate can be removed from Active Directory.

For detail info:
Members of your organization may receive a non-delivery report if your
delegate's mailbox object is removed from Active Directory before you can
remove the delegate in Outlook 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=909638

Hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)
