Changing FSMO server from Exchange/DCHi group
I have a Windows 2003 DC/FSMO server with Exchange 2003 on the same server. I want to move the FSMO services onto a new Windows 2003 R2 Domain Controller in the same domain. Will this cause any problems for Exchange? Thanks for any help. Well, the new server is actually going to replace the old one; the old one was set up originally without any kind of fault tolerance so I've set up a new ML370 with RAID controller and RAID1 (OS) and RAID5 (storage). I've already made it a domain controller and made it a Global Catalogue server. Now I want to move the FSMO services and install Exchange 2003, move the mailboxes over and switch off the old server. The old server will be rebuilt with fault tolerance and become a replacement for my existing file & print server (not fault tolerant). So, the original question is - will moving the FSMO services to the new domain controller have any effect on Exchange 2003, which is used daily and currently installed on the current FSMO server? I need to keep Exchange running while I install the new domain controller. You can move the FSMO roles, but you cannot run dcpromo on the Exchange
server as long as it is an Exchange server. If you installed Exchange on it while it was a domain controller, it must remain a domain controller. -- Show quoteEd Crowley MVP - Exchange "Protecting the world from PSTs and brick backups!" Thanks for the reply. When you say 'If you installed Exchange on it while it was a domain controller, it must remain a domain controller', what do you mean? Do you mean I can never run dcpromo or switch it off because it will corrupt my domain or do you mean I could switch it off forever with no problems? Thanks agin.
