connecting to exchange

I have some external users I want to connect to the exchange server over VPN,
the VPN and exchange are on the same server.
I can logon to the VPN with the user name and password.
But when I try to add a new account in the external outlook it asks me for
the users login name and password. I give the same one as VPN and exchange
doesn't accept them, I've tried restting the password, but still doesn't work.
From the external pc I can ping the internal IP so I know I can see the
server on the private IP
Any sugestions please

What version of Exchange?  Can you access any other resource on the server?
Can you explain your VPN setup on the Exchange Server, how its configured?

Exchange 2003
from remote OWA works and I can print to a network printer
I can ping the other servers but can't map to them, indcluding the exchange

VPN is set up with 2 NIC's  Firewall/NAT
NIC 1 private IP address
NIC 2 public IP Address

Multihoming your Exchange server is not recommended.  Can you setup a
different box for the VPN or look at hardware VPN which is what I would
suggest, Cisco Pix, SonicWall, Netgear, etc.
