Hi

Received the caption alert but nothing has been changed in the server. Had
check the following : according to the
http://www.tech-archive.net/Archive/Windows/microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs/2005-09/msg04545.html

1. The MS Exchange Management service startup is Automatics but at present
the status is stopped. It is checked Local System Account.
2. There is no raid card on the server as far as I am aware.
3. There is no third party antivirus software or backup software
4. in the Registry the following are as how it should be
Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeSA

Value Name: DependOnService

Value Data:

EventLog
NtLmSsp
RPCSS
LanmanWorkstation
LanmanServer

For the Exchange Information Store service:

Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS

Value Name: DependOnService

Value Data:

EXIFS
MSExchangeSA

For the Exchange Management service:

Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeMGMT

Value Name: DependOnService

Value Data:

WinMgmt
RPCSS

Nothing in the event logs which will tell anything. Is this an important
service ? what is the possible effect if it is stopped ? I have restated
this service.

I believe that this service supports the Windows Management Instrumentation
(WMI) interface used by certain monitoring tools and custom scripts.  If it
stops, it shouldn't affect core Exchange function.

Hi there,

Thank you. I did look up what is WMI but don't seems to find anything which
would tell me abit more. What kind of monitoring tools which may use WMI. At
present, I don't have a clue what to look for to check whether anything was
affected.

Would you kindly point me to the right direction as to what to look for.

Many thanks

All kinds of monitoring and administrative tools use this.  I don't care to
do the massive research to catalog them for you, though, sorry.

Hi there,

Sorry to ask such a question. Didn't meant to ask for massive research.
Since you guys are so experience and knowledgable and thought it was just a
typing out type of job.

But a BIG thanks to for the info, at least I know that doesn't affect the
core of exchange.

Many thanks,

No, you'll be fine.  You're welcome to disable the service until somebody
screams about it!  It's likely nobody will.
