Rename Domain with Exchange 2003 installed on Domain Controller

I need to rename my domain. All of the MS KB articles say I cannot rename the
domain if Exchange 2003 is installed on the Domain Controller. I do not see
any techincal explanations as to why this cannot be done. I guess I am
looking for the technical reason I can't rename a domain with exchange
installed on the domain controller.

My configuration is: 1 Stand alone Windows 2003 server configured as a
Domain Controller with Exchange 2003 SP2, SQL Server 2000, and proprietary
software installed on it.

Can anyone provide me with a techincal reason I cannot rename the domain?

Thanks,
Paul

How about this one: Microsoft flat-out says you can't do it without breaking
Exchange?  Shouldn't that be good enough?

Management won't go with that. They want something stating why. One of our
software developers has already done it on a test system and so now
management thinks it is ok.......

As LanWench stated its not supported by Microsoft.  Your test environment
may well be working but if you have issues Microsoft will not support it in
production.  To make this work you must first move your Exchange 2003 off
your DC.  This is requirement, you cannot rename a domain while Exchange
2003 is installed on a DC.  If you want technical details then I would call
Microsoft PSS directly.

When they ask "Why?" you can tell them, "Because it will break everything."
